The Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center is located on the campus of College of the Canyons, a California community college located in Santa Clarita in northern Los Angeles County. The $18.3-million facility boasts a spectacular 7,500-square-foot proscenium stage with a state-of-the-art sound system and 886 seats, as well as the experimental Black Box Theater. Funded by the State of California ($15.9 million) and the City of Santa Clarita ($2.4 million), the 47,000-square-foot center provides instructional, community and professional entertainment and programs. Designed with a green room, scene shops, costume and property storage, orchestra pit, makeup/dressing room, lockers, showers, box office and snack bar, the Performing Arts Center is a one-of-a-kind performance destination for the Santa Clarita Valley.
The center was designed to accommodate patrons with accessibility requirements. Accessible seating is available in rows E and P of the Orchestra section. Ushers are available to assist patrons with accessibility requirements to the elevator for access to row E. Transfer seats may also be available, and ushers can store wheelchairs during performances. We recommend that patrons using wheelchairs notify the box office in advance and be accompanied by a companion to provide assistance. Seating for up to three companions is available next to wheelchair or transfer-accessible seats. Depending on availability, seats for additional guests will be located as close as possible to the accessible seat. Patrons requiring additional disability-related accommodations, including sign-language interpreters, should contact the box office at (661) 362-5304 no later than two weeks prior to the performance date. The Black Box Theater also is designed to accommodate patrons with accessibility requirements.
Tickets for those with accessible needs, subject to availability, may be purchased in a variety of ways:
• Call the box office at (661) 362-5304 during business hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
• Email the box office at email@example.com
• Visit the venue's box office.
Note: Wheelchair (remain in wheelchair) and Transfer (wheelchair patron transfers to theater seat) seating is reserved exclusively for those with accessibility needs and up to three companions per wheelchair and transfer-accessible patron. The purchase or use of accessible seating by those without such needs is prohibited.
ASSISTIVE LISTENING DEVICES
The center is equipped with an infrared assistive listening system, and headsets may be used at any seat. Assistive listening devices (ALDs) amplify and clarify sound by reducing or eliminating ambient noise. ALDs may be requested from any usher or the house manager. A photo ID or credit card is required to check out an ALD for a performance.
The performing arts center, an integral part of the college’s plans for more than 30 years, was funded by the State of California in 1999. A partnership with the City of Santa Clarita provided an additional $2.4 million that expanded seating considerably. Spencer/Hoskins & Associates of Pasadena designed the building, ground was broken in December 2001, and the center was completed in the summer of 2004. A gala opening occurred on Oct. 15, 2004.
BLACK BOX THEATER
The Black Box Theater on the northwest side of the center is a “flexible seating” venue for new and experimental productions. Due to the nature of the theater, the exact number of seats available is often not known until close to opening night. Therefore, a limited number of seats will be placed on sale at the beginning of the season until the exact seating count has been confirmed. All seating is general admission.
College of the Canyons has ample parking for all events. For evening performances Monday through Friday, parking is available in lots 4, 5 and 6 one hour prior to event time; parking is available in lots 1, 2 and 3 after 7 p.m. For performances on Saturday or Sunday, parking is available in lots 1 through 6 two hours before event time and until two hours after the event ends. Campus Safety will enforce all parking regulations. Bus parking will be coordinated with Campus Safety and must be arranged at least three business days before the event.
The mission of the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons is to educate, entertain and enrich our community through a diverse blend of professional, educational and community programming.
The Performing Arts Center is an enduring facility that will grow, adapt and respond to changes in the future, reflecting the evolving needs, desires and interests of the community. It will continuously pursue the goal of providing relevant, timely and current exposure to the arts, whatever form that may take.
