Art Gallery Presents Artwork by Budding Artists Nov. 23 to Jan. 9

“Every child is an artist,” said Pablo Picasso. “The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

The College of the Canyons Art Gallery exhibit “Budding Artists” will showcase artwork created by children at the college’s Center for Early Childhood Education (ECE) from Nov. 23 to Jan. 9, 2014.

“This exhibition is a terrific opportunity to understand the creative potential in everyone,” said Larry Hurst, COC Art Gallery director. “These children create with open curiosity and wild abandon that is unmatched in most adults.”

Located on the college’s Valencia campus, the ECE primary focus is to promote feelings of competence and self-worth that will serve as a strong foundation for the children’s future growth and educational development. Making art plays an important role in a child development.

“Art in the early years is very sensory and process-oriented, and at times wonderfully messy,” said Monica Marshall, ECE director of preschool programs. “Art provides children with a means for self-expression, problem solving and communication. Our teachers at the ECE approach art by providing the landscape for individual uniqueness and creativity to develop through hands-on experiences with diverse materials. We view art as a language children use to investigate their world.”

An artist reception will take place in the Art Gallery from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23.

A panel of college educators will lead a special discussion from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013.

The College of the Canyons Art Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Please contact the Art Gallery for holiday hours.

Those unable to visit the gallery during normal hours are welcome to contact the gallery to schedule a viewing appointment.

All gallery exhibitions and related events are free and open to the public.
