Invitation to Cover Nursing Program Pinning Ceremony

Subject: College of the Canyons registered nursing program graduation and pinning ceremony.

Time: 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 30, 2013

Place: Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center (PAC) at College of the Canyons

Contact: Diane Morey, (661) 362-3214; Bruce Battle (661) 362-5604

Event: Seventy-nine students from the College of the Canyons nursing program will take part in a traditional pinning ceremony marking the completion of each nurse’s education.

As part of the ceremony, the second cohort of 13 students from the COC/Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital (HMNMH) licensed vocational nurse (LVN) to registered nurse (RN) program will be among this semester’s graduates.

Celebrating the accomplishments of newly graduated registered nurses, the pinning ceremony serves as a symbolic welcoming for all those entering the nursing profession.

At the event COC nursing department faculty members will present each graduate with a nursing pin before the group collectively recites the Nightingale Pledge traditionally taken by new nurses.

“This event represents the culmination of a nursing student’s hard work and dedication, as well as the beginning of a new career in this caring profession,” said Diane Morey, director of the COC nursing program. “We are proud to have the opportunity to honor our graduating RNs in the presence of their family, friends and peers.”

Since 2000 the College of the Canyons nursing program has worked diligently to address the statewide nursing shortage -- and has seen significant growth as a result. Each year a minimum of 100 new students are admitted to the program. Currently there are 265 nursing students enrolled at College of the Canyons, with an additional 60 students expected to enter the program in fall 2013.

Of the 60 nursing students scheduled to begin in the fall semester, 10 are being supported by grant funding received from The Song-Brown program, which was established in 1973 to increase the number of family practice physicians, physician assistants and registered nurses being trained in the state to provide needed medical services to Californians.

About the LVN to RN Program

In fall 2012, COC received a Responsive Training Fund grant valued at nearly $240,000 from the California Community College Chancellor’s Office to train LVNs at HMNMH to make the transition to become registered nurses.

As part of the program, LVN students were able to continue working at the hospital -- maintaining their current positions, salaries and benefits -- while using designated leave time to undergo training to become an RN.

The collaboration helped to prevent the dismissal of more than 30 LVNs employed at the hospital, while also maintaining the facility’s required RN to patient ratio and providing lab and classroom space for the college’s crowded nursing program.

All participants who have completed the college’s LVN to RN program will now be eligible for licensure as registered nurses.

Note to Editors: Photo opportunities will be available. However, tripods are NOT allowed inside the theater. Photographers shooting from a tripod will be confined to the PAC sound booth.

Entrance to this event is by ticket only. Media members interested in attending should contact the College of the Canyons Public Information Office at (661) 362-5604 or pio@canyons.edu.
