Educational Trip to Cuba Planned for January 2014
NOTE: This trip has been canceled.
Imagine what it would be like to wander around the streets of Havana with a camera, capturing scenes of everyday life in Cuba: the bustling squares, majestic cathedrals, iconic cigar shops and “Yank tanks,” the classic American cars that still zoom down Cuban roads as vestiges of a bygone era.
For College of the Canyons students, there’s no need to keep imagining. College of the Canyons will be offering students the rare opportunity to travel to Cuba and study photography and geology from Jan. 11 to 18, 2014.
“It is very exciting to offer our students the opportunity to travel to Cuba and absorb this country’s rich culture through photography and geology,” said Vincent Devlahovich, chair of the Earth, Space and Environmental Sciences (ESES) department at the college. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
The cost of the trip is approximately $2,975 and includes:
- Round-trip airfare
- Six nights hotel accommodation
- Lunch and breakfast, two dinners
- Medical insurance in Cuba
- Visa fees
- A bilingual guide
- Museum entrance fees
- All bus transfers in Cuba
During the weeklong trip, students will have the opportunity to tour Old and New Havana, a water treatment center, a local orphanage and Las Terrazas, a self-sustained community and ecological reserve in the countryside, and the beautiful Santa Maria beach.
The largest island in the Caribbean, Cuba has remained a mystery to many Americans ever since travel was restricted in the 1960s due to the United States’ embargo against Cuba. In 2011, President Barack Obama eased travel restrictions for Cuban Americans, as well as students and religious missionaries who meet certain restrictions.
Space is limited. A $500 non-refundable deposit is due no later than Oct. 11, 2013.
