American Sign Language Department and
Interpreter Training Program

The American Sign Language Interpreting Program is a two-year comprehensive program designed to award students with an Associate of Arts Degree in American Sign Language Interpreting.  The Associate Degree will equip students with the necessary skills for entry-level positions within the field of interpreting. In addition, The Associate Degree will optimize students transfer to a four-year college or university.

2nd Annual Deaf Awareness Week

ASL Club's 5th Annual Spring Festival
Saturday, April 19th, 1pm-5pm in the Honor Grove
Deaf Awareness Week will conclude with the Fourth Annual Spring Festival in the Honor Grove. We will be offering an ASL Workshop for beginners, face painting, watermelon contest, Balloon Animals, an obstacle course bounce house, tie-dye shirt decorating, Cupcake decorating, an amazing raffle and more. The highlight of this event is our Annual “ASL IDOL.” Students and community members are encouraged to compete by performing a signed song, poem, joke or story. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for children two - eight, and free for children under two years old (Admission includes food and beverage and all activities) Everyone is welcome; knowledge of ASL is not necessary

Panel Discussion - “Indelible Experiences: An Insightful and Comical Look at Deaf Culture”
Tuesday, April 22, 2:45 to 4:45pm, Hasley Hall 230
A discussion panel with Deaf and hard-of-hearing participants will share memorable experiences with humor included, of their experiences being Deaf in a hearing world. This event is ideal for those who have little to no experience with individuals who are deaf and hard-of-hearing to those who are learning sign language and the culture and for those who just want to have an evening of a laughs! (Flex Credit available)

“See What I Am Saying: The Deaf Entertainers Documentary” Screening and Discussion
Wednesday, April 23rd, 3-5:30 pm, Mentry Hall 343
The Documentary follows the journeys of four extraordinary deaf entertainers over the course of a single year as their stories intertwine and culminate in some of the most important events of their lives. (Flex Credit available)

ASL Dodge Ball
Thursday, April 24th, 5:30-7:30pm, EPEK-116
One or more dodge ball games, depending on how many players we have. Have fun, while signing and throwing a ball at your friends. Get your teachers involved also! One raffle ticket per participant for a chance to win some fun prizes. Additional tickets may be purchased.

Admission: One canned food item to be donated to the SCV Food Pantry.

"Wink" Workshops
Saturday, April 26th, 10am - 1pm and 2pm-5pm

Deliberate Practice 10am – 1pm (.3 CEUs)

What does it take to become an expert? It's not practice alone. It's something more intentional. Workshop participants will learn how to deliberately practice and the research behind the concept.

Space Walk 2pm – 5pm (.3 CEUs)
This workshop will introduce the concept of space frames with real world application. Participants will practice space techniques and rules to enhance their language use.

Admission: $15/workshop.

Keith Wann’s ASL Comedy Tour
Saturday, April 26 at 7pm in the Performing Arts Center

Ticket information

Keith Wann presents some classic material as he hosts the ASL Comedy Tour 2014, along with headliners Wink and Branton Stewart. Featuring a special appearance by Justin "Wormy" Callaway and introducing the newest rising star, Greg Bland. Prepare to laugh your ASL off! Voice noise and occasional incoherent utterances by Wann and Wink will make it accessible for the signing-impaired. This special event is presented by the College of the Canyons ASL Club and American Sign Language Department.

Rated ASL-13. Performers subject to change.
