ABOUT THE CENTER
The Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center is located on the campus of College of the Canyons, a California community college located in Santa Clarita in northern Los Angeles County. The $18.3-million facility boasts a spectacular 7,500-square-foot proscenium stage with a state-of-the-art sound system and 886 seats, as well as the experimental Black Box Theater. Funded by the State of California ($15.9 million) and the City of Santa Clarita ($2.4 million), the 47,000-square-foot center features instructional, community and professional entertainment and informational programs. Designed with a green room, scene shops, costume and property storage, orchestra pit, make-up/dressing room, lockers, showers, box office and snack bar, the Performing Arts Center is a one-of-a-kind performance destination for the Santa Clarita Valley.
College of the Canyons’ founders planned for the college to have three main focuses: academic transfer, technology, and the arts. A performing arts center was an integral part of the college’s plans for more than 30 years and was funded by the State of California in 1999. A partnership with the City of Santa Clarita provided an additional $2.4 million that allowed for a considerable expansion of seating. Spencer/Hoskins & Associates of Pasadena designed the building. Ground was broken in December 2001, the facility was completed in the summer of 2004, and a gala opening occurred on Oct. 15, 2004.
The Black Box Theater, located at the northwest end of the Performing Arts Center, is a unique “flexible seating” venue for new and experimental productions. Due to the nature of the theater, the exact number of seats available is often not known until close to opening night. Therefore, a limited number of seats will be placed on sale at the beginning of the season until the exact seating count has been confirmed by the technical staff. College of the Canyons has ample parking for all events. For evening performances Monday through Friday, parking is available in lots 4, 5, 6 and 7 one hour prior to the scheduled event time; parking is available in lots 1, 2 and 3 after 7 p.m. For performances on Saturday or Sunday, parking is available in lots 1 through 7 two hours before event time and until two hours after the event ends. Campus Safety will enforce parking rules when any car is parked at red curbs, in accessible spaces without a proper permit, outside of a designated space, in front of a doorway, or in a construction site. Bus parking will be coordinated with Campus Safety and must be arranged at least three business days before the event.
The mission of the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons is to educate, entertain and enrich our community through a diverse blend of professional, educational and community programming.
The Performing Arts Center is an enduring facility that will grow, adapt and respond to changes in the future, reflecting the evolving needs, desires and interests of the community. It will continuously pursue the goal of providing relevant, timely and current exposure to the arts, whatever form that may take.
